Call to the
National Joint Council
Taking Democracy Back!
Las Vegas, Nevada – June 16-19, 2019
To: All NOLSW local unit officers and members
From: Pam Smith, NOLSW President
Date: March 18, 2019
The National Joint Council (NJC) will be held at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, from Sunday, June 16, through Wednesday, June 19, 2019. Every eighteen months, the NJC brings together NOLSW members from around the country to strengthen our union by developing skills in workshops, learning about important topics, debating union issues, and HAVING FUN!
We have exciting plans for this NJC that include plenary sessions addressing important topics that impact NOLSW members and the clients we serve, including health care for all and climate change. Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right that impacts not only our negotiations with management but the lives of everyone living in this country. We will explore solutions to the broken health care system in this country that treats quality healthcare as a privilege for the few while leaving many of us behind.
While climate change affects all of us, the effects are already felt most urgently by low-income persons. We’ve witnessed first-hand the devastation that has been caused by natural disasters in this country that are directly related to climate change from the unprecedented flooding and destruction caused by hurricanes in Puerto Rico, Texas, Florida and North Carolina to the utter terror and desolation caused by the uncontrolled wildfires in California. Only by Taking Democracy Back can we begin to address these and other important issues facing us today.
While the challenges facing us are massive and daunting, we know that together we are unstoppable. Progressive-minded people everywhere have taken to the streets with unprecedented activism. The 2018 mid-term elections showed us the hope and opportunity that exists for a transformed government that truly represents all people. People who had never held public office, including NOLSW members, ran for and now occupy seats in local, state, and national government. At the NJC, we will hear from current and former NOLSW members who have taken on the challenge of working to create a government that serves all people.
I hope you can join us at the NJC this June where we will be celebrating our victories, learning how we can continue to make a difference, and seeing that together we can continue
