NOLSW Resolution on Resistance

The National Executive Board of NOLSW adopted the following resolution which advocates resistance to anticipated right wing attacks on progressive causes and social programs under the Trump administration.

Whereas, the National Organization of Legal Services Workers, UAW, Local 2320 (NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320), is a union of social justice advocates with members who work in non-profit legal, human services, education and advocacy organizations around the country.

Whereas NOLSW, UAW Local 2320 members work on behalf of poor persons, battered women, abused and neglected children, the elderly, the sick and disabled, as well as immigrants and refugees.

Whereas NOLSW, UAW Local 2320 members advocate for housing rights, food and nutrition programs, social welfare benefits, physical and mental health services, employment rights, education and women’s reproductive rights. 

Whereas NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 is committed to protecting, defending, and advocating for the rights, dignity and respect of all of our members and the clients that they serve.

Whereas NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 recognizes that many of the laws and programs that protect and empower our members and the clients they serve will face unprecedented attacks by the election of a President and the appointment of individuals who have vowed to dismantle and reverse the progress made in the fight for social, economic, and environmental justice.

Be It Resolved that

NOLSW, UAW Local 2320 will fight to support the work of our members, including civil legal services, health and human services, housing rights, women’s reproductive rights, immigrant and refugee rights, education rights, historic preservation, food and nutrition programs, employment rights, and First Amendment rights.

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 commits to preserving and expanding programs that benefit the clients our members serve, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TANF, Food Stamps (SNAP), LiHEAP, USF, HUD Section 8 housing, USDA Rural Development (RD) housing, and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 will continue to fight for increases in Legal Services Corporation and other funding at the federal and state level that supports the work of our members. 

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 commits to protecting workers against attacks on the rights and privileges earned by American unions for more than a century.    

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 commits to fight to preserve and expand access to healthcare, including supporting efforts to preserve and expand the Affordable Care Act.

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 commits to protect the civil and human rights of all people, including racial, ethnic, and religious minorities; immigrants; women; and the LGBTQ community. 

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 will continue to advocate for free and fair elections and against corporate influence in the electoral process, including working in cooperation with organizations that are fighting to overturn Citizens United. 

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 will fight for a living wage for all workers by working in cooperation with organizations that seek to increase the minimum wage and promote a living wage.

NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 commits to work in cooperation with organizations that strive to protect the Earth from climate change, air pollution, and the poisoning of our water.

The Executive Board Members of NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320, in cooperation with NOLSW, UAW Local 2320 staff will actively seek information and communicate with our members about the issues and rights identified in this Resolution.

The Executive Board Members of NOLSW, UAW LOCAL 2320 in cooperation with NOLSW, UAW Local 2320 staff will implement an improved union-wide communication system to educate and mobilize our members, including lobbying Congress, demonstrating, and protesting to combat attacks against any of these causes.
