Episcopal Church Adopts Resolutions Favored by NOLSW
Updated On: Jul 30, 2010 (16:36:00)

At its Triennial Convention last month in Anaheim, California, the Episcopal Church (TEC) adopted a number of significant resolutions dealing with issues of social and economic justice.  Two of the resolutions dealt with legislative issues identified by NOLSW, and the UAW as well, as top legislative priorities.

Resolution D039 "Fixing Our Broken Labor Laws" urged Congress and the President to pass labor law reform currently being debated, and supported the principles of the Employee Free Choice Act, including majority sign-up, card check, increased penalties for violations of workers' rights, and arbitration of first-time labor agreements if the parties are unable to agree.  Resolution D048 "Adoption of a Single-Payer Universal Health Care Program" urged the Congress to adopt a national "Single-Payer" health care program to insure everyone in the United States, such as provided in HR 676, sponsored by the Hon. John Conyers (D-MI).  D048 also supported passage of interim measures leading to the adoption of a "single-payer" program.

Both resolutions were originally authored by NOLSW Financial Secretary/Treasurer Tim Yeager, who attended the Convention as a representative of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF).  The resolutions were sponsored by delegates who were members of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship and the Union of Black Episcopalians, and were supported by a wide variety of groups within the Church.

Resolutions passed at the Convention empower and authorize the church's legislative office to work on Capitol Hill for passage of the legislation involved.
